It’s known to all that Aamir Khan is playing the lead in Rajkumar Hirani’s film Peekay. But what people are unaware of, is the fact that Aamir Khan agreed to be a part of this film without even reading the script. Some believe that it was his ‘blind faith’ in the maverick director that prompted him to sign the film, while others feel that it was his insecurity of losing out on a project with Hirani after delivering a blockbuster like 3 Idiots. Stardust brings you all the details of what really went down…
They say there is no ‘if’ and no ‘but’ when you trust someone completely. But it takes years to trust someone so much that you blindly believe in them and their vision. However, the same doesn’t hold true for Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani and the way the former believes in the latter’s talent, passion and proficiency as a filmmaker.
Those who even know a little about Aamir Khan would vouch for his penchant for detailing and his perfectionist nature. His judgment hasn’t gone wrong in the last few years – whether it is acting in a film, producing, directing or even debuting on the small screen with Satyamev Jayate. Whatever Aamir has been touching of late has been turning into gold, the latest example is of course, Satyamev Jayate. But the world knows that it takes nothing less than a brilliant and a unique concept to convince this ultra-choosy actor. He’s known to take a lot of time before giving his nod to any project but when he agrees to be a part of it, he gives his 100 per cent to it. So when Stardust got to know that Aamir had actually agreed to be a part of Rajkumar Hirani’s next directorial venture Peekay without even reading the script, it came as a surprise to us.
Though Aamir Khan’s association with Hirani gave the industry one of its biggest hits of all time, 3 Idiots, the fact that they have come together only once cannot be ignored. There have been directors with whom Aamir has worked with more than once in the past but never in his career has he signed a project without going through the script or understanding each and every detail of it and his character in the film. However, sources close to Aamir say that he trusts Raju’s work and his capability a lot. “This is probably for the first time in his 23-year-old career as an actor that Aamir has signed a film without even reading the script. He had worked with Ashutosh Gowariker in Baazi and later in Lagaan but still he took a lot of time before saying yes to Lagaan. But Aamir was very impressed with Raju Hirani’s working style and professionalism. Also, their thought process and wavelength match strongly. Raju has directed a few ad films that starred Aamir and he has been recommending Hirani’s name to many brands that he endorses. But still, it was really surprising or rather shocking that he agreed to do Peekay like that. It only goes to show the bond Aamir and Hirani share with each other and the level of trust and faith between them,” mentions the source.
Although people expected Hirani to direct the third part of the Munna Bhai series before starting any other project, the fact is that his heart lies with Peekay, at least for now. For those not in the know, Raju Hirani always wanted Aamir to play the protagonist in Peekay. The source further explains, “Hirani had sent him the script a few months back. But Aamir was super busy with Reema Kagti’s Talaash and later with his television debut, Satyamev Jayate. Also, the fire that broke on the sets of the show hampered the schedule badly and things got postponed. The new entrant in his family, his son Azad has also added to his personal duties and responsibilities. Aamir is also preparing for his character in Yash Raj Film’s Dhoom 3 and then there were brand endorsements and other social commitments that consumed so much of his time that he couldn’t even look at the script of Peekay.”
It was at this point that Rajkumar Hirani got a bit reckless and thought of roping in Ranbir Kapoor for the role. So, he asked his team to write another draft of the same film keeping Ranbir Kapoor in mind. Ranbir obviously didn’t want to leave the opportunity to be a part of the film and to work with Rajkumar Hirani at such an early stage in his career. In fact, people close to Ranbir say that he was ready to give anything to be a part of this film. But as his luck (or rather bad luck) had it, he took some time to go through the script. A source reveals, “Ranbir was busy shooting for Barfi and he is a very sorted actor. He doesn’t take much time to read a script, unless he is genuinely busy. He also doesn’t like to read a new script in the middle of a shoot. That distracts him from the ongoing film shoot.”
Immediately after reading the script, he informed Hirani that he would be keen on doing this film, but he had prior commitments to take care of. He was willing to rearrange his schedule for a maverick filmmaker like Hirani. That’s when the news reached Aamir Khan and before Ranbir could say yes, Aamir, without even reading the script, agreed to do the film. Aamir didn’t want to miss his chance to work with Hirani after 3 Idiots. “Although Aamir was busy and couldn’t manage to read the script of Peekay, he still agreed to do the film only because of his confidence in Raju’s capability as a filmmaker,” says the source close to the actor.
Well, Ranbir for now, is a bit devastated for having lost the opportunity of working with one of his personal favourites and one of the most talented filmmakers of current times. However, with Aamir coming on board, the fact that the audience would once again get to experience nothing less than a magic on celluloid cannot be ignored.
